Obituary for James Bernard Gerke

James Bernard Gerke, age 78 of Bushnell, FL and Gowen, MI, passed away November 24, 2018 in Florida. He was born in Grand Rapids on May 1, 1940, the son of Frederick and Clara (Braun) Gerke Sr. He was a graduate of Catholic Central and was a veteran of the US Navy. Jim retired from GM Plant 2 on Alpine in 1997. He was an avid bicyclist faithfully riding his bike many miles. He also was a pigeon flyer raising homing pigeons and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was married to Patricia A. Steinbis on September 17, 1991 and they enjoyed retirement in the Gowen area and in Florida.He was preceded in death by his siblings, Katherine, Fred Jr., Brother Stephen OSF, Rosemary, Robert and Thomas; brother-in-laws, Roger Vaneklase, Donald Vaneklase, Bill Winstrom, Donald Boatright, and Leo Steadman; and sister-in-law, Agnes (Pete) Gerke.Surviving are his wife Pat; his siblings, Lorraine Veneklase, Bill (Joanne) Gerke, Mary Lou Veneklase, Patricia Boatwright, Jack (Kathleen) Gerke; his in-laws, Clifford (Donna Lee) Steadman, Joyce E. (Larry) Ward, Earl (Carmi) Steadman, Harry Sobotka, Geri Gerke and Margaret Gerke; and several nieces and nephews.  A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2019 from 2 to 4 PM at Hurst Funeral Home Greenville concluding with US Navy military honors. Memorial contributions may be given to a charity of your choice.
