Obituary for Richard Maurice Shaw

Richard Maurice Shaw, 82, entered into Heavenly Glory on September 10, 2019 after a brief illness. “Dick” was born December 20, 1936, the son of Harold and Ruth (Willet) Shaw, and was raised on the family farm in Fenwick, MI.

Dick loved farming and graduated from Sheridan Agricultural High School (1955) before going on to earn an Agronomy degree from Michigan State University (1959).   While in East Lansing, he fell in love with a student nurse from Sparrow Hospital School of Nursing, Shirley Stark.  They married on September 19, 1959 and ultimately settled in Cass City, MI where Dick had a rewarding career with Production Credit Association (now Greenstone) and Beta Seed.

Nearly every farmer in the “Thumb” knew Dick Shaw.  He loved his 160-acre “hobby” farm in Cass City (affectionately dubbed The Shawnderosa), where he and Shirley raised three boys, along with an assortment of crops and livestock.  The farm was also a major deer hunting retreat for friends and family.   They relocated to Greenville in 2012.   They were longtime members of First Baptist Church of Cass City and current members of Calvary Baptist Greenville. Dick was an active Gideon and served as a chaplain for them.

Dick was a devoted husband and father and loved to spend time with family.  He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Shirley and his three sons, The Rev. R. Mark Shaw (Diane) of Greenville, David (Barbara) of Grand Rapids, and Kevin (Shawna) of Grand Ledge.  Dick and Shirley were proud grandparents of nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.  He is also survived by his four siblings, Robert, Judy (Edwards), Jim, and Phil.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Ruth.

A celebration of Dick’s life will be held Friday, Sept. 13th at Calvary Baptist Church, with an 11am viewing and 12 noon service, with lunch to follow.   Dick’s son, The Rev. R. Mark Shaw, will be officiating.   In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either Calvary Baptist Church or The Gideons International.
