Obituary for Neil Haven Schmachtenberger

Neil Haven Schmachtenberger, aged 77 of Gowen, ran to meet his Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, November 19, 2018, at Hathaway Hills Assisted Living in Greenville.  Neil was born in Lansing on March 12, 1941, to Theron (Ted) Eldred and Elizabeth Maxine (Felton) Schmachtenberger.  He graduated from Lansing Eastern High School and briefly attended G.M.I.  After successfully taking classes at Lansing Business School and Lansing Community College, Neil was challenged by several friends to try a class at MSU.  He received his first degree in social studies in 1964 and went on to further his education with a master’s degree in curriculum.  At MSU, he also met his future wife, Judith (Pohl). They married on June 26, 1965, at Calvary Baptist Church, Muskegon.  Neil is survived by his wife of 53 years, Judie; daughter and son-in-law, Darcy and Stuart Leach of Christiana, TN; son and daughter-in-law, Trevor and Danielle Schmachtenberger of Greenville; and four grandchildren, Avery Park and Lydia Renee Schmachtenberger of Greenville and Elizabeth Elliott and Madelyn Ann Leach of Christiana, TN.  Neil was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Ned Royce.  Neil’s first teaching job was at Richardson Junior High in Oscoda, MI.  Two years later, after an exciting trip to Europe for the summer, Neil and Judie relocated to Gowen, MI on the Flat River.  He was employed at GHS where he taught history, government and psychology.  Neil became department head, advised the local National Honor Society and volunteered as timer at track meets.  After 30 plus years in education, Neil became a licensed carpenter in the local community.  Additional interests included the local antique auto club, photography, bee keeping, wood working, cross country skiing and becoming a pilot.  In his late 20’s, Neil developed an interest in long distance running.  One could often find him running laps around Baldwin Lake, developing a trail through local woods, heading home for a 6 mile training run or corraling friends after church to join him for a 5 mile jaunt.  Neil’s passion for running culminated in running the famed Boston Marathon nine times.  Having committed himself to Jesus Christ, Neil found joy in service to his community as well as his local church, Faith Baptist, where he served as a trustee for many years.  He also served as an usher and Sunday school teacher to adults.  The family expresses a heartfelt thanks to the staffs at Hathaway Hills and Spectrum Health Hospice for their kind and loving care for Neil over the past years.      A service of thanks will be held at Faith Baptist Church, 315 N. Greenville West Drive, at 11:00 am Wednesday, November 21 with Pastor Robert Winter officiating.   A luncheon will follow the service. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at church.  Private interment will be in West Montcalm Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Neil’s name may be made to Faith Baptist Church or World Vision, P.O. Box 70399, Tacoma, WA  49481.

Hebrews 12:1 ...let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith...
